Rui Hachimura was born on February 8, 1998, in Toyama, Japan. He was born to Makiki and Zakari Jabil alongside his siblings Allen and Amina Hachimura. His grandfather chose his name, as the Japanese character for Rui represents “base”, which is a term he used in the context of baseball, his favorite sport. Rui Hachimura played for Meisei High School, in Sendai Japan. After a successful stint there, he was invited to play in the Jordan Brand Classic. He later committed to play for the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Rui played three seasons for the Bulldogs before entering the 2019 NBA Draft. Rui Hachimura was drafted with the 9th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards on April 15, 2019. Rui Hachimura Basketball Career

High School Career (Mesei High School)

While still living in Japan, Rui Hachimura began his road to the NBA. He attended Meisei High School in Sendai, Japan. On December 29, 2013, Rui helped Mesei win its second title in the All-Japan High School Tournament. Hachimura carried them to the title with a 32 point performance. In 2014, he led Mesei to a second consecutive title. After being invited to play in the 2015 Jordan Brand Classic, Rui then signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Gonzaga. Following his commitment to Gonzaga, Rui led Mesei to a third straight title, this time tallying 34 points, 19 rebounds, and three blocks.

College Career (Gonzaga Bulldogs)

Despite coming in as a 3-star recruit, Rui’s eligibility was in question before arriving at Gonzaga. Rui claimed he understood 80 percent of English, but he had to be able to pass the SAT to gain entrance to college. They flirted with the idea of Rui attending prep school or redshirting his freshman year at Gonzaga. Instead, Rui went on to pass the SAT and met the GPA requirements to play for Gonzaga in his freshman year.

In his debut for the Bulldogs, Hachimura posted just one point and three rebounds over four minutes against Utah Valley. His season-high game came with 10 points against Mississippi Valley State. Although his freshman year was underwhelming, Rui still became just the fifth Japanese-born player to play NCAA Division I. In his sophomore year, Rui showed improvement while averaging 11.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Rui Hachimura exploded in his junior year, and his name was finally recognized on a national level. On November 6, 2018, Rui poured in 33 points in a win over Idaho State. Hachimura helped the Bulldogs achieve a top rank in the country after they knocked off Duke in the Maui Invitational finals. He was then named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Throughout his stellar junior year, Hachimura averaged 19.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. His breakout year helped him be ranked as a potential NBA Lottery pick, leading him to enter the 2019 NBA Draft.

NBA Career

The Washington Wizards drafted Rui Hachimura with the 9th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft on April 15, 2019. Hachimura’s draft selection marked just the second Japanese-born player to ever be drafted into the NBA. Rui showed strong promise right away, posting a double-double in his NBA debut. He tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds in his debut against the Dallas Mavericks on October 23, 2019. Shortly after, Hachimura set his career-high with a 30 point barrage against the Los Angeles Clippers on December 1, 2019. Hachimura then suffered a groin injury two weeks later, forcing him to miss some time. The young Japanese blooming player has continued to show signs of stardom in his short career thus far.
