De’Andre Hunter was born on December 2nd, 1997 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father passed away when he was just seven years old. After a statistically impressive high school career, Hunter committed to Virginia over the likes of Notre Dame and N.C. State.

Hunter helped lead the Virginia Cavaliers to their first-ever National Championship during his sophomore season. Although he plays for the Atlanta Hawks, Hunter was actually drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers and then traded to the New Orleans Pelicans before landing in Atlanta and signing his rookie contract.

Hunter is now a key piece of a young Atlanta Hawks roster that features Trae Young and Cam Reddish. One of the top, young small forwards in the NBA, Hunter is a player that excels on both sides of the ball with his excellent defense and scoring ability.

High School Career (Friends’ Central School)

De’Andre Hunter attended Friends’ Central School which is located in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. He was named the PIAA Class AA Player of the Year in his junior season. He averaged 21.6 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. During his senior season, he averaged 23.5 points, 9.8 rebounds 3.0 assists and 2.5 blocks per game. 

Hunter was rated as a four-star recruit coming out of high school. He was a top 100 overall recruit and a top 15 small forward for the 2016 high school class.

College Career (Virginia)

Hunter had a number of scholarship offers out of high school. He ultimately chose to attend Virginia University over Notre Dame and N.C. State. Hunter committed to Virginia on September 15th, 2015.

As a redshirt freshman, Hunter was a key part of the Virginia Cavaliers team. Helping lead the team to a No. 1 seed in the March Madness Tournament, Hunter broke his wrist during the 2018 ACC Tournament which caused him to miss the rest of the season. Virginia ended up losing in the first round to #16 seed UMBC (the first #1 to lose to a #16 in the NCAA tournament).

Instead of declaring for the NBA Draft, Hunter decided to return to Virginia for his sophomore season. He averaged 15.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Hunter once again led Virginia to a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. This time, the Cavaliers would go on to win the title as Hunter scored 27 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the championship game.

Hunter announced his intention to forgo his final two collegiate seasons as he declared for the 2019 NBA Draft.

NBA Career

Hunter was drafted fourth overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2019 NBA Draft. Then, as part of the Anthony Davis trade, Hunter was sent to the New Orleans Pelicans. He was then quickly sent to the Atlanta Hawks along with Solomon Hill in exchange for three draft picks in the 2019 NBA Draft.

In his NBA debut, Hunter scored 14 points and grabbed two rebounds in a Hawks win over the Detroit Pistons. Hunter played in 63 games during his rookie season, starting in 62. He averaged 32 minutes per game and shot 41 percent from the field (including 35.5 percent from three). Hunter averaged 12.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.
