Thomas Jermaine Bryant was born on July 31, 1997, in Rochester, New York. He was born to Linda and Edward Bryant and has no siblings. Thomas attended two different high schools before going on to college. He first attended Bishop Kearney in Irondequoit, New York. After two years there, Bryant transferred to Huntington Prep School in Huntington, West Virginia.
The McDonald’s All-American was highly sought after out of high school. He was so highly desired, that he took to live national television to declare where he would attend college. On April 4, 2015, Thomas Bryant declared that he was committing to Indiana University via ESPN. After two years for the Indiana Hoosiers, Bryant declared for the 2017 NBA Draft. Thomas Bryant was selected 42nd overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. He was then traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers later waived Bryant and assigned him to their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. In 2018, Bryant was claimed off waivers by the Washington Wizards. Thomas Bryant attended two different high schools in his teenage days. He first attended Bishop Kearney High School in Irondequoit, New York. Bryant helped Bishop Kearney win the 2013 New York Class AA Tournament and the New York Federation Tournament of Champions in his sophomore year. After his sophomore year, he transferred to Huntington Prep in Huntington, West Virginia. In his junior year, his first year at Huntington, Bryant averaged 13.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game. As a senior, he averaged 17.3 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.5 blocks, and 2.5 steals per game. He was also widely known for his play on Team SCAN, a Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Circuit AAU affiliate.
Following his excellent high school career, Thomas Bryant was one of the most highly sought after recruits in decades.
Coming out of high school, Bryant had the ability to play at almost any college in the country, including Indiana, Kentucky, Syracuse, UCLA, and more. The McDonald’s All-American ultimately decided to play for Indiana University. His first big game as a Hoosier came with a 17 point, 7 rebounds, and 4 block performance in a win over Creighton.
Thomas Bryant also helped the Hoosiers take down the Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA Tournament with a 19 point and five rebound performance. In his freshman season, Bryant averaged 11.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. The Big Ten All-Freshman and Third Team All-Big Ten player decided to return for his sophomore year. In his sophomore year, Bryant averaged 12.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game.
Thomas Bryant was drafted with the 42nd overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz on June 22, 2017. On draft night, he was traded, alongside the 3th overall pick, Josh Hart, to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for the 28th pick, Tony Bradley. After inking his rookie deal with the Lakers on July 30, 2017, Bryant was waived on June 30, 2018. He was then assigned to the Lakers G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. After a solid year in the G League, Bryant was named All-NBA G League First Team.
