Here’s something you probably didn’t know about Coby White: his real name isn't Coby. Alec Jacoby White was born on February 16, 2000. Alec Jacoby White decided to stick with the name “Coby” White. Coby is an American professional basketball player in the NBA for the Chicago Bulls. He stands at 6’4” and weighs in at 195 pounds. Coby attended high school at  Greenfield School in Wilson, North Carolina. Following high school, he also decided to stay in his home state and attend the University of North Carolina.

Coby White had a strong connection with his father that he shared in a heartfelt story entitled “For My Father”. His father, Donald, was also a basketball player that played for North Carolina Central. Unfortunately, on August 15, 2017, Donald passed away to liver cancer. This rocked Coby’s world, and he promised to dedicate every minute he played for the rest of his life to his father. Coby’s mother, Bonita, works for an insurance company, and his brother Will is currently an assistant coach for Mars Hill University basketball. He also has a sister, Tia. 

Coby White was drafted 7th overall to the Chicago Bulls in the 2019 NBA Draft. White became the first University of North Carolina product to be drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bulls since Michael Jordan. After a promising summer league, White found himself with a small bench role for the Bulls. As the 2019 season progressed, White began to open some eyes. With a season-ending injury to point guard Kris Dunn, Coby finally got a larger chance to shine. On February 22, White came out blazing hot, dropping 33 points against the Phoenix Suns. The next day, he again dropped 33 points against the Washington Wizards. He became the first rookie in NBA history to score 30 points or more in back-to-back games off the bench. High School Career (Greenfield School)

Coby White started his rise to fame at Greenfield School in Wilson, North Carolina. The 6-4 flashy guard poured in 3.573 points in his high school career over four years. This earned Coby the title of the all-time leading scorer in North Carolina basketball history. Following a fantastic ending to his high school career, Coby was named North Carolina Mr. Basketball. He was also awarded the 2018 USA Today’s North Carolina Player of the Year. To top off his high school career, White was also named a 2018 McDonald’s All-American. Before heading out to Chapel Hill, Coby played for the United States U18 National Team and helped them win the Gold Medal in the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Americans Championship. Not to mention, he led this team in scoring and earned all-tournament honors.

College Career (North Carolina Tar Heels)

After joining Nassir Little in the McDonald’s All-American Game, the tandem headed off to Chapel Hill together to play for North Carolina. Coby White signed his National Letter of Intent to attend UNC on November 8, 2017. Coby’s career started out his college career small with an eight-point and three-assist game against Wofford. The slow start did not last long, as Coby exploded for 34 points against Syracuse on February 26, 2019.

Well, Coby White ended up passing Michael Jordan on North Carolina’s all-time freshman scoring list on March 5, 2019, when he hit 469 points. He also set a three-point shooting college freshman record with an 82 three-pointer season. The Tar Heels were eliminated in the Sweet 16 in the March Madness Tournament by Auburn, but it was an impressive course for the Coby White led the team. After the defeat to Auburn, on April 3, 2019, Coby White decided to declare for the 2019 NBA Draft.

Coby White was selected 7th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls. The draft took place on June 20, 2019. He became the first UNC product to be drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the first round since Michael Jordan. Coby started off his NBA career by averaging 15 points rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. This was a promising start for the blooming guard, and excitement began to grow for the Chicago Bulls fans.
