Matvei Babenko

Huge Russian winger who has a nice shot and bulls his way to the crease and has a goal score’s touch when he gets there. Has a wide skating base, and good balance and power in his stride. An effective forechecker who wins a lot of battles down low as he muscles defenders off the puck. He lets loose shots on the fly coming down the wing. Plays on the power play as a shooter, and also as a screen in front. He does have more work to do in reception and control of pucks when on the fly. His rapid growth spurt is a factor in his lack of acceleration and the air of clumsiness, as his co-ordination isn’t caught up yet. Still has to improve his ability to receive pucks smoothly, control them on the fly and as his hand skills are questionable, but he uses his big body and long stick to shield pucks well and is calm under pressure.
