Trevor Ariza Biography Details, Age, Net Worth, & Basketball Career

Trevor Ariza is an American pro basketball player who currently plays small forward for the Portland Trail Blazers. He was born June 30, 1985, in Miami, Florida, but grew up in Southern California. Ariza played one year of college basketball at UCLA before turning pro and becoming the 43rd overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. He was selected by the New York Knicks and has gone on to become the definition of a journeyman, playing with nine different teams, including multiple stints with some teams.

Ariza spent the first season and a half of his NBA career with the Knicks before being traded to the Orlando Magic. Early in the 2007-08 season, the Magic traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers. In Los Angeles, he played a supporting role when the Lakers won the 2009 NBA championship. As a free agent during the summer of 2009, Ariza signed a five-year deal with the Houston Rockets. A year later, he was part of a four-team trade that sent him to the New Orleans Hornets. One year later, he was traded to the Washington Wizards, who he played with for two years.

During the summer of 2014, Ariza returned to the Rockets via a sign and trade. After four years in Houston, he signed a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns in 2018, only to be traded to the Wizards early in the 2018-19 season. As a free agent in 2019, Ariza signed with the Sacramento Kings but was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in January 2020.

Trevor Ariza Basketball Career

High School Career (Westchester High School)

Trevor Ariza attended Westchester High School in Los Angeles. The school has a proud athletic tradition and a history of producing NBA players. During his junior year, his team included other future NBA players Hassan Adams, Brandon Heath, and Bobby Brown. Together, they led Westchester to a state championship. As a senior, Ariza was named California’s Mr. Basketball.

Coming out of high school, most recruiting services labeled Ariza a five-star prospect and one of the 20 best players in his class.

College Career (UCLA Bruins)

Ariza stayed close to home for college, attending UCLA and playing for head coach Ben Howland. Team-wise, it was a down year for UCLA, as the Bruins were 11-17. However, Ariza started 23 games, averaging  11.6 points and 6.5 rebounds. He was named to the All-Pac 10 Freshman Team and declared for the NBA Draft after one season.

NBA Career

The New York Knicks selected Ariza with the 43rd pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. He became the youngest player to ever play for the Knicks, appearing in 80 games as a rookie, including 12 starts. Ariza played sparingly for the Knicks the following season, and in February, he was traded along with Penny Hardaway to the Orlando Magic for Steve Francis. He remained a role player with the Magic until November 2007 when he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for Brian Cook and Maurice Evans.

With the Lakers, Ariza primarily came off the bench. However, he started all 23 playoff games the Lakers played in 2009, averaging 11.3 points per game and helping the Lakers win the NBA championship. After the 2009 playoffs, Ariza signed a five-year, $33 million deal to join the Houston Rockets. During the 2009-10 season, Ariza started 71 games and scored a career-high 14.9 points per game. However, during the summer of 2010, he was involved in a four-team trade that sent him to the New Orleans Hornets.

Ariza spent two years in New Orleans before being traded with Emeka Okafor to the Washington Wizards for Rashard Lewis and a draft pick. After the 2013-14 season, Ariza was part of a sign and trade that sent him back to the Rockets. Ariza started every game he played in for the Rockets over the next four years. As a free agent in 2018, Ariza signed a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns. However, he played just 26 games for the Suns before being traded to the Wizards for Austin Rivers and Kelly Oubre Jr.

As a free agent in 2019, Ariza signed a two-year deal with the Sacramento Kings. After coming off the bench with Sacramento, Ariza was traded in January 2020, going to the Portland Trail Blazers along with Wenyen Gabriel and Caleb Swanigan in exchange for Kent Bazemore and Anthony Tolliver.
