Sekou Oumar Doumbouya was born on December 23, 2000. He is currently a professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA. Sekou was born in Conakry, Guinea, and moved to France at an early age. and started his basketball career with France local club CJF Les Aubrais at just 13 years of age. He moved to France at just one-year-old with his mother M’Mah Marie, three siblings, and one cousin. His father was unable to obtain a visa, so he remained in Guinea.
Sekou Doumbouya played for INSEP in Paris and joined their affiliate club, Centre Federal de Basket-ball at 14 years of age. He then went on to play professionally with Poitiers Basket 86 of the LNB Pro B, second-tier French League. He attended a private school while playing professionally. Growing in France, Sekou Doumbouya did not have the traditional American route to the big leagues. At just 13 years of age, he played for a local club CJF Aurais. The next year he played for Centre Federal. In 2016, Sekou began to play professional basketball in France. He joined Poitiers Basket 86, a second-tier league team in France. He played for them for two years before transferring to Limoges CMP in 2018. This was his first stink in a first division club. He averaged 6.9 points and 2.8 rebounds per game for Limoges CMP. His raw talent and high potential was enough to classify him as an NBA prospect.
The Detroit Pistons decided to take a risk by selecting the French native, Sekou, with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft on June 20, 2019. Sekou Doumbouya became the first Guinea-born player to be drafted into the NBA. Doumbaya started his NBA career with a stint on the Grand Rapids Drive, the Detroit Pistons G-League affiliate. His first breakout game in the NBA came on January 15, 2020, against the Boston Celtics. Sekou left Pistons fans drooling over his potential as he tallied 24 points with two rebounds, one assist, and one steal in a victory.
