Ricky Rubio was born in El Masnou, Catalonia, Spain on December 21, 1990. After starting his professional basketball career in Spain at age 14, Rubio was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. However, he played two more seasons in span before coming to the NBA.
Often considered the best international prospect of all-time, Rubio is one of the best all-around point guards in the NBA. After being traded to the Utah Jazz in 2017, he helped lead the Jazz to a playoff berth. He was the first Jazz player to score a double-double in the playoffs since John Stockton in 2001.
In July of 2019, Rubio signed a three-year, $51 million deal with the Phoenix Suns. Now a nine-year vet in the NBA, Rubio brings experience to a young Suns’ roster that is looking to rebuild its franchise.

Ricky Rubio was drafted fifth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2009 NBA Draft. However, Rubio played in Spain for two more seasons after being drafted by the Timberwolves. On June 1, 2011, Rubio reached an agreement to make his way to the NBA. He started his NBA career by being named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month in the first month of the 2011-2012 season. In March of 2012, Rubio tore his ACL and missed the remainder of his rookie season.
During the 2013-2014 season, Rubio set the franchise record for steals in a single season. On October 31, 2014, Rubio signed a four-year, $56 million extension with the Timberwolves. A week later he injured his ankle and missed three months. He underwent surgery the following April.
On June 30, 2017, Rubio was traded to the Utah Jazz in exchange for a 2018 first-round pick. Helping lead the Jazz to the playoffs, Rubio scored the team’s first triple-double in the playoffs since John Stockton in 2001. On July 8, 2019, Rubio signed a three-year, $51 million deal with the Phoenix Suns.
