Elfrid Payton was born on February 22, 1994, to parents Elfrid Sr. and Danielle. Payton played his college basketball near his hometown of Gretna, Louisiana by electing to stay in-state and play at Louisiana-Lafayette.
A former National Defensive Player of the Year in college, Payton is one of the best defensive players in the NBA. He is also a triple-double machine and has set a couple of records, including becoming the fifth player in NBA history to record a triple-double in five-straight games.
After playing for Orlando, New Orleans and Phoenix, Payton is now a member of the rebuilding New York Knicks.
Elfrid Payton attended John Ehret High School in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Payton averaged 12.8 points, 5.2 assists and 4.1 steals per game as a senior and won district MVP. He was a first-team all-state selection his senior year.
Payton elected to play college basketball at Louisiana-Lafayette. His sophomore season, Payton averaged 15.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game. He earned first-team All-Sun Belt.
During his junior season, Payton averaged 19.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Helping lead the Ragin’ Cajuns to the 2014 NCAA Tournament, Payton once again earned first-team All-Sun Belt. He also won conference Defensive Player of the Year and National Defensive Player of the Year.
Payton elected to forgo his senior season and enter the 2014 NBA Draft. Payton was drafted 10th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers. That night, he was traded to the Orlando Magic for Dario Saric, a future first-round and second-round pick. Payton was named to the Rising Stars Challenge his rookie season. On march 20, he became the first Magic’s player to record back-to-back triple-doubles and the first NBA rookie to do so since 1997.
On February 8, 2018, Payton was traded to the Phoenix Suns for a 2018 second-round pick. He needed just nine games with the Suns to record his second triple-double with the team, a team record. Following the completion of the season, Payton signed with the New Orleans Pelicans in July.
After spraining his ankle in November of 2018, Payton missed 22 games. After returning, he became the fifth player in NBA history to record a triple-double in five straight games. On July 9, 2019, Payton signed with the New York Knicks.
