Robert Tonyan is a tight end for the Green Bay Packers. Born in McHenry, Illinois, Tonyan started his football career as a quarterback. In his junior season, Tonyan caught 40 passes for 601 yards and six touchdowns. He went on to earn All-Missouri Valley Conference team honorable mention. As a fifth-year senior, Tonyan had 56 receptions for 699 yards and a school-record 10 touchdowns. Despite starting his career as a quarterback, Tonyan finished his career with a number of school receiving records.
Tonyan went undrafted in 2017. He signed with the Detroit Lions in May but was eventually released by the team prior to the start of the season. Tonyan was eventually signed by the Green Bay Packers to the practice squad near the end of the season. Green Bay would go on to re-sign Tonyan for the 2018 season.
In 2018, Tonyan’s first career reception was a 54-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers. He finished with just 4 receptions for 77 yards and one touchdown. Once again in 2019, Tonyan would go on to start just one game and appeared in just 11. He caught 10 passes for 100 yards and one touchdown.
2020 was the year that Tonyan finally broke through. He only started eight games but managed to catch 52 passes for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. Now a legit receiving threat in the Packers’ potent offense, Tonyan is one of the fastest rising tight ends in the NFL.
