Jalen Hurts is a quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. Born in Houston, Texas, Hurts played high school football at Channelview High School where he was coached by his father. Hurts began his college football career at Alabama, where he became the first true freshman in 32 years to start at quarterback. After three seasons, including a National Championship, Hurts transferred to Oklahoma for one season. Hurts was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, it appears Hurts may be a big part of the Eagles’ franchise moving forward.
Hurts played football at Channelview High School in Channelview, Texas where he was coached by his father Averion. In his senior season, Hurts had 3,775 combined passing and rushing yards and 51 combined touchdowns. Hurts was considered a four-star recruit and one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in his class.
Hurts began his college career at the University of Alabama, where he became the first true freshman to start at quarterback in 32 years. He set numerous records in his first season in Tuscaloosa. Hurts finished with 36 total touchdowns, a new school record and finished with 3,774 total yards. He went on to be the SEC Freshman and Offensive Player of the Year.
In his sophomore season in 2017, Hurts led the Crimson Tide to a 13-1 record and a spot in the College Football Playoff. In the National Championship Game, Hurts was benched at halftime for Tua Tagovailoa. He finished the season with 17 passing touchdowns and just one interception. Hurts would go on to be the primary backup to Tagovailoa in his junior season.
Following his junior season, Hurts announced he would be transferring to Oklahoma for his final year of eligibility. In his first game at Oklahoma, he broke the school record for single-game yardage record with 508 total yards. He finished the season with 3,851 passing yards, 1,298 rushing yards and 52 total touchdowns. Hurts finished second in the Heisman voting behind Joe Burrow.
Hurts was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He started the season as the third-string quarterback but quickly rose to the backup role. In December, Hurts eventually replaced starting quarterback Carson Wentz after a disappointing season by Wentz.
Hurts appeared in 14 games during his rookie season, starting in three. He threw for 989 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ran for 320 yards and averaged 5.8 yards per rush.
After being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, Hurts signed a four-year deal worth just over $6 million. After making $2.6 million during his rookie season, Hurts will earn $883,000 in 2021. He has an estimated net worth of $1 million.
Hurts was born in Houston, Texas to Pamela and Averion Hurts. He has an older brother named Averion and a younger sister named Kynnedy. His brother Averion is currently a coach at Alabama. In addition to being an excellent football player in high school, Hurts excelled at powerlifting.
