David Johnson is a running back who plays for the Houston Texans of the National Football League. Johnson has spent years being highly regarded as one of the most productive dual threat backs in the NFL and is beloved by fantasy football owners for his ability to catch the football and carry it.
Johnson started his football career at Clinton High School in Clinton, Iowa, which is about 125 miles from Cedar Falls. Johnson was a three-sport star in high school, playing football, basketball and running track. Johnson rushed for 42 touchdowns as a senior, and accepted an offer to play college football at Northern Iowa.
At the University of Northern Iowa, Johnson was a feature back from the start. He got at least 200 touches in each of his four years with the school. Over those four years, Johnson over 6,000 total yards and 63 total touchdowns for one of the best programs in FCS football over that time frame.
David Johnson was drafted in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. Johnson was an outstanding offensive player for the Cardinals, earning over 1,000 total yards in three of his first four seasons with the team. Injuries were the only thing that could slow Johnson down with Arizona before he was traded to the Houston Texans in a trade that sent DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals.
David Johnson signed a three-year, $36 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals in 2019 after originally signing a four-year rookie deal with the Cardinals. Johnson’s current contract comes with an average base salary of $7.95 million and a signing bonus of $12 million.
