NBA Playoff Schedule 2024

With the NBA season in full swing, every teams goal is to reach the Playoffs, where sixteen teams will once again lock horns to determine the league’s overall champion.

Over 30 states have established a local, legalised sports betting sector, and it’s likely this number will continue to grow in the future. Therefore, more Americans than ever will have the opportunity to wager on the NBA Playoffs, with U.S sportsbook operators expecting a bumper level of activity throughout the tournament’s approximate two-month duration.

Furthermore, we’ll provide essential information regarding the NBA Play-In Tournament, where eight teams will compete for the two seventh and two eighth seeded spots - the only four PlayOff participants whose inclusion doesn’t come as a virtue of their respective Conference ranking. We’ll also discuss some critical dates for the upcoming campaign, as fans start to already prepare for next season’s major events, such as the NBA Draft, Christmas Day fixtures, and the annual All-Star weekend in February.

When do the NBA Playoffs 2024 begin?

The 2023/24 NBA campaign - the 78th of all-time - commenced Tuesday, October 18, 2022, with the final round of regular season fixtures occurring on Sunday, April 9, 2023. As per the standard set-up, each team contested a total of 82 games throughout this six-month period, with 41 home and 41 away ties to navigate.   

The all-important NBA Play-In tournament begins two days after the regular season close-down, with the opening clash taking place on Tuesday, April 11, and the final match-up scheduled for Friday, April 14. The day after this tournament concludes (Saturday, April 15), the PlayOffs officially commence. 

The NBA Play-In Tournament 

The sides who finish in seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth positions in either Conference will be automatically enrolled into the NBA Play-In tournament. As previously referenced, these eight sides will vye for the four remaining PlayOffs places to bring the competition’s quota to the full sixteen team complement. Those who finish in seventh and eighth will need to take one of two opportunities to qualify for the PlayOffs, as they’re afforded a second-chance to advance if they lose their opening clash. Conversely, ninth and tenth placed teams must win two consecutive games to progress, and have no margin for error. 

Fixtures will initially take place between the seventh and eighth positioned teams (often referred to as the ‘seven-eight’ game) and the ninth and tenth ranked sides (or nine-ten game). In each fixture, the team who achieved a higher league position are awarded home advantage. 

The winner of each Conference’s ‘seven-eight’ game will instantly go forward to the PlayOffs (as seventh seeds), before the losers meet the winners of the ‘nine-ten’ games to secure the final two PlayOff places (as eighth seeds). 

The following eight sides qualified for this campaign’s Play-In tournament (final league position in brackets):

Therefore, as a consequence of these regular season placings, the Play-In tournament initially staged the following fixtures:

1. Chicago Bulls (10th) @ Toronto Raptors (9th) Venue: Scotiabank Arena, Toronto (ON) Tip-off: 7.00pm ET
2. Oklahoma City Thunder (10th) @ New Orleans Pelicans (9th) Venue: Smoothie King Center, New Orleans (LA) Tip-off: 9.30pm ET 

Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Lakers won the two seven-eight fixtures, and therefore automatically qualified for the Play-Offs. The two losing sides in these contests, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves respectively, faced either winner of the nine-ten game, Chicago Bulls and Oklahoma City Thunder (each game is still subject to Conference segregation - Eastern Conference’s seven-eight game loser plays Eastern Conference’s nine-ten winner, same rule applies for Western Conference). The two remaining outfits, Toronto Raptors and New Orleans Pelicans, were instantly eliminated, and were therefore not granted a place in this season’s Play-Offs.

Friday, April 14

Chicago Bulls @ Miami Heat; Venue: Kaseya Center, Miami (FL) Tip-off: 7.00pm ET

Oklahoma City Thunder @ Minnesota Timberwolves; Venue: Target Center, Minneapolis (MN) Tip-off: 9.30pm ET

The winner of each game would progress to the Play-Offs, assuming the final two places in the competition. As per the earlier round, the outcome of both ties would be determined by a single-game contest. The two home sides prevailed, with Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves advancing at the expense of the Bulls and Thunder.  

Therefore, this season’s NBA Play-In tournament saw Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat secure the Eastern Conference’s seventh and eighth seed spots respectively, whilst in the Western Conference, Los Angeles Lakers emerged as seventh seed, and Minnesota Timberwolves as eighth. 

2023 NBA Playoff schedule 

Given the number of teams involved, the first round of the PlayOffs takes approximately a fortnight to complete. At each stage of the tournament, opponents will meet on seven occasions, with the first to win four games progressing to the next round.    

Currently, the second round of the NBA Playoffs, otherwise referred to as the Conference Semifinals, is scheduled for Monday, May 1 & Tuesday May 2. However, these dates may be brought forward to the weekend of April 29 & 30 depending on events. The winners of the Conference Semifinals will then meet in each division’s respective Conference Finals - also known as the Playoffs ‘third round’ - on Tuesday 16, May & Wednesday 17, May. Again, these fixtures could be moved into a set of earlier dates, Sunday 14, May & Monday 15, May, based on the competition’s progress. 

After all these rounds have completed, the remaining two teams will advance to the NBA Finals, and play out a single seven-game head-to-head series for the NBA Championship. The NBA Finals will start on Thursday, June 1, and could potentially run to Sunday, June 18. However, the duration of the Finals is index-linked to progressive results. As mentioned above, the seven-game format promotes a ‘first to four wins’ model, and therefore the contest could close-out as early as the fourth match-up.

The first four games are scheduled as follows: Game 1 - Sunday, June 4; Game 2 - Wednesday, June 7; Game 3 - Friday, June 9; Game 4 - Sunday, June 9. 

The provisional dates for possible additional games have also already been provided: Game 5 (if required) - Wednesday, June 12; Game 6 (if required) - Saturday, June 15; Game 7 (if required) - Tuesday, June 18. 

All of these timings are consistent with the traditional approach taken to schedule the NBA calendar, a process which returns for the second successive season after the coronavirus-impacted 2020/21 campaign. 

Given the popularity of the tournament, every Playoffs game - from first round fixtures to the Championship series - is available to watch on television. Coverage will be provided by a host of national sports broadcasters, with ABC, ESPN, TNT, and NBA TV all screening live games. Basketball fans will also have the option of watching events unfold online, with platforms such as HULU, YouTube, DirecTV Stream, fuboTV and Sling providing live streams of each Playoff tie. 

The NBA Finals  

The 2022 NBA Finals were won by the Golden State Warriors, who needed just six games to overcome the Boston Celtics. The California-based outfit have been involved in the NBA Finals in six of the last eight years, lifting the Larry O’Brien Trophy on four occasions during this timeframe. Will the Warriors reach the final stage of the Playoffs once again?

Anyone of the sixteen competing teams has a reasonable chance of featuring in the Championship series, a notion strengthened by the fact that the last three NBA Finals have seen six different teams compete for the title.

How do the NBA Playoffs 2023 work? 

Although the Playoffs consist of multiple games, played across a number of rounds, over an intense eight-week period, the competition’s format is relatively straight-forward to follow. However, prior to delving into the structure of the Playoffs itself, we must first consider how teams qualify for the NBA’s end-of-season showpiece event. 

The league’s 30 participant members are evenly divided into two sub-sections based on their geographical location, referred to as the Eastern and Western Conferences. At the conclusion of each NBA season, the top six teams from either Conference automatically advance to the Playoffs. These six franchises are each allocated a ‘seeding’ which directly reflects their final league position - first place becomes first seed, second place becomes second seed, and so on. Rankings are determined by each outfit’s win/loss percentage; quite simply, the more games a team wins, the higher their Conference standing. 

In the event that two sides within this bracket have identical win/loss statistics, the higher seeding status will be awarded to the team who has the stronger head-to-head record in matches between the two sides. If this method still doesn’t separate the two franchises, the seeding will hinge upon who has the superior win/loss record when facing teams within their ‘division’ (a further geographical categorization within each Conference - there are three of these additional groups in both the East and West Conferences). If an outright winner still hasn’t emerged, the seeding allocation will be decided by calculating each team’s win/loss percentage in relation to games played exclusively against sides within the same Conference.

The strongest twelve teams across the two Conferences are joined by the four sides who successfully navigate the NBA Play-In tournament. Therefore, sixteen franchises will head into the Playoffs, with each hoping to emerge as the overall NBA Championship winner. 

The route to the NBA Finals is split into Eastern and Western Conference pathways, with the winners of each of these ‘mini-tournaments’ progressing to the NBA Finals. 

The seeding structure dictates which two teams face each other in each of the eight first round fixtures (same approach applied to the four Eastern and four Western Conference ties). The match-ups will be as follows: first seed vs. eighth seed, second seed vs. seventh seed, third seed vs. sixth seed, and fourth seed vs. fifth seed. Therefore, the better the team’s seeding, the more favourable their draw.

After the first round has been negotiated, with each contest following the ‘best of seven’ format, the Conference Semifinals will take place. The winners of these four ties will then advance to the Conference Finals, with the victors in each of these fixtures taking their position in the grand finale - the NBA Championship series (NBA Finals). Throughout each round, the franchise possessing the highest seed ranking will be awarded home court advantage; often a crucial factor in deciding which team progresses to the next stage. The team who assumes this advantage will play on home soil in games one and two, and if required games five and seven. Therefore, if more than four games are needed in any series, it’s likely the team with home advantage will play more locally-based games than their opponent.

There is a predetermined fixture bracket applied to the PlayOffs, so franchisees are aware of their potential future opponents in each round before the competition starts. This structure is influenced by seedings, with both Eastern and Western Conference sub-tournaments adopting the same organizational format.

The NBA All-Stars Game 2023

The 2022/23 season’s All-Star event was staged at the Vivint Arena, Salt Lake City, the home of Western Conference side Utah Jazz. The city last hosted the All-Star weekend exactly thirty years earlier, in February 1993. The 72nd edition of the NBA’s mid-season extravaganza, which took place on the weekend of February 18 & 19, culminated in the usual All-Star game contest, this time fought out between sides captained by Los Angeles Lakers’ legend LeBron James, and Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Each captain, and the eight remaining starters for the match, were selected via a three-tier voting process; votes cast by fans accounted for 50% of the final result, whilst nominations from players (25%) and a media panel (25%) made up the remainder of the ballot. 

The position of ‘captain’ was recently introduced into the All-Star fold, which enables the player who achieved the highest number of votes in each Conference to assume leadership of their respective Eastern and Western representative sides. Therefore, this season’s All-Star game pitted ‘Team James’ against ‘Team Antetokounmpo’. LeBron James has assumed the captaincy of an All-Star side for the past six seasons now and therefore has taken on this role in every campaign since its creation in 2018. Furthermore, James’ inclusion in the tournament’s 2023 edition set a new NBA record, as the Lakers small forward completed an incredible sequence of nineteen consecutive All-Star appearances. Giannis Antetokounmpo captained the Eastern Conference team for the third occasion, having also earned this honor in 2019 and 2020. 

The reserves for the All-Star game were decided as a result of votes put forward by the league’s coaches, with no coach able to nominate a player from his own team.

The two captains drafted their starters from a pool of eight players, composed of the four candidates with the highest votes in each Conference. Those players were as follows:

Eastern Conference: Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics), Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving (both Brooklyn Nets), Donovan Mitchell (Cleveland Cavaliers)

Western Conference: Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets), Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks), Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), and Zion Williamson (New Orleans Pelicans).  

Each captain would also draft seven selections each from a quota of fourteen ‘reserve’ players. 

In a change to the traditional draft methodology of recent years, the captains made their picks just before tip-off. Previously, to enable some preparation time, the captain chose their players at least a week ahead of the All-Star game.

Team Giannis emerged victorious in Utah, defeating Team LeBron by 185 points to 174; it was the first time James had suffered a loss whilst captaining an All-Star team. Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum surpassed the All-Star game’s previous scoring record, netting a staggering 55 points to help Team Giannis claim the win. 

NBA Draft 2023

This year’s NBA’s Draft Pick event will once again take place at New York’s Barclays Center, the home stadium of the Brooklyn Nets. The draft is scheduled for Thursday, June 22, 2023. 

The most recent draft, which occurred ahead of the current NBA campaign, saw the Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat have their second pick removed as punishment for violating rules regarding free agent discussions. Therefore, the 2022 draft only permitted 58 players for selection, as opposed to the regular 60-strong playing pool which we’ll see at this year’s event.    

NBA 2023/24 season: Christmas Day Games

The announcement of the NBA’s Christmas Day fixture list is always eagerly anticipated, as fans look forward to a bustling schedule of festive action. However, we’ll have to wait a little while longer to discover the line-up, as the NBA isn’t set to release this information until mid-July. Given that additional time may be required for the NBA office to confer with TV networks regarding game dates that typically generate the most interest (a surge in spectator levels will also be seen around other public holidays/key season events), details regarding Christmas Day activity may not be shared until August.  

NBA All-Stars Game 2024  

The next edition of the All-Star weekend is scheduled to take place at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse Stadium in Indianapolis on February 18, 2024. The venue was originally earmarked to host the All-Star game in 2021, but the event was re-configured and transferred to Atlanta as part of the NBA’s response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The stage is set for another entertaining NBA Playoffs series, with sixteen teams looking to quickly recover from a grueling regular season, and battle their way to June’s NBA Finals. 

We’ve also got the critical NBA Draft on the horizon, as those sides who have performed poorly over the last six months look to strengthen their roster ahead of the next campaign. As the 2023/24 season moves into full swing, we’ll inevitably have an exciting set of Christmas Day fixtures to look forward to, before we then begin to prepare for the 2024 All-Star Game just after Valentine's Day. Plenty to get excited about!
