NBA BETTING ODDS: NBA LINES AND HOW TO READ NBA ODDS

NBA betting is pretty simple and similar to other major sports leagues like the NFL. For a full description on how to understand NBA odds and how to bet them, check out our NBA betting guide. 

In the United States, you will likely see American odds for the NBA. 

To estimate your winnings using American odds, you can use the following formula. 

• Payout with negative American odds = (100/Odds)*Wager
• Payout with positive American odds = (Odds/100)*Wager

Most games will have a favorite and an underdog. The underdog will have positive odds. For positive odds, it’s simple to note that you would win the amount posted on the odds if you bet $100. For example, the Hawks are +140 against the Celtics, meaning you’d get back a total of $240 (including your bet) if you placed a $100 wager on the Hawks and they won.

The favorite will have negative odds. For negative odds, you need to wager the amount posted on the odds to win back $100. In that same example, if the Celtics are -180 against the Hawks, you’d need to bet $180 on the Celtics to win $100 and get $280 back total for your wager.

BET ON THE NBA: TYPES OF NBA BETS 

With the increasing popularity of the NBA, sportsbooks are providing tons of ways to bet on the sport. But the NBA is still most consistently bet on in the ways you may be used to from other sports: a moneyline, the spread, the total, and player props. 

MONEYLINE

The moneyline is probably the simplest way to bet on any sport, and the NBA is no different. Wagering on a NBA moneyline is simply wagering on the team to win the game outright. Since some teams are underdogs and some teams are favorites, the moneyline will shift to properly assess how likely each team is to win. 

Like we explained above, if the underdog Hawks are +140 against the Celtics, you could wager $100 and get back $240 in total if they win ($140 in profit). If the favorite Celtics are -180, you would need to wager $180 to get back $280 in total if they win ($100 in profit). 

New bettors will enjoy the simplicity of moneyline betting, but it can be harder to find value, especially if you aren’t hitting underdog wins. 

POINT SPREAD

Betting on the NBA point spread is where many experienced bettors make their money, and it’s because the value of the line is always equal to make your returns and profits more consistent. A point spread is a number of points given or taken away from a team to make the matchup even in the sportsbook’s eyes. 

Going back to our Hawks and Celtics example, since the Hawks are the slight underdog, they may have a point spread of around +4 points. This means if you bet Hawks +4 and they lose the game 110-107, you would still win your wager. The Celtics would be -4 points in this scenario, meaning they need to win by 4 points to push your wager and at least 5 points to win it. 

The pricing of spread bets on most sportsbooks will be somewhere around -110 odds, meaning you would need to bet $110 to win $100 in profit on most NBA spreads. 

TOTAL (OVER/UNDER)

The next-most popular way to bet on NBA games is the total. You can do this in a few ways. The over/under bet is essentially betting on the number of points scored by both teams combined.

With the NBA becoming a more offensive league, we often see game totals reaching well into the 220s depending on the matchup and how the teams usually score. 

Just like point spreads, the pricing of an over/under is usually somewhere around -110, which means you’ll need to bet $110 for that $100 profit. 

If the Hawks-Celtics game has an over/under of 232.5, you’ll bet that they’ll score either more than 232.5 points combined or less. If you take the over and the Celtics win 118-115, you win your wager because of the 233 combined score. 

You could also bet on team totals. If the Hawks total was 115.5 and you took the under, you would win your wager since they scored 115 points. 

PLAYER PROPS

Player props has become an incredibly popular way to bet on sports because of how many accessible sportsbooks are out there that offer these wager types to people in many states across the country. 

One way many people bet player props is betting them in a parlay style, which means you get increased odds but need every single bet you made to win to get your money. 

A player prop is betting on a specific event or outcome in a game. It’s a fun way to wager since you can directly bet on your favorite players if you’re not sure who will win the game. 

For NBA player props, this can be betting on how many points, rebounds or assists a player gets in a game, plus many more specific stats and events. 

If you wanted to just do player prop bets in our Hawks-Celtics matchup, you may bet on Trae Young over 26.5 points. If he scores 27 points or more, you win your wager. You can also bet on things like which player will score the first points in the game, which can offer much juicer odds since it’s a harder thing to predict. 

For standardized over/unders on normal player props like points scored or assists made, the odds are generally around -110. But if you bet on things like first basket scored or first assist made, you may get much bigger, positive odds.

NBA FUTURES: NBA CHAMPIONSHIP AND NBA DIVISION WINNERS

Another way to bet on the NBA is a futures bet. Like it sounds, this is essentially betting on a distant event and usually is a long-term prediction to make. NBA futures odds can often be quite large and potentially very profitable if you make a great prediction. Read below for some of the popular NBA futures bets.

NBA Championship Odds: The most popular and simple NBA futures bet would be betting on the eventual champion of the NBA Finals. You can bet on this far in advance of the Finals, with some sportsbooks even offering odds for the NBA Finals for the following year before the current championship has even happened. This can be a place you can find an edge if you think a certain team may sign a superstar in free agency and become more likely to win it all. 

NBA Eastern Conference Championship Odds: This is just like making a bet on the NBA champions, except now you’re just betting on who will win the Eastern Conference Finals. The teams are split in half, so you’re both more likely to pick a winner while also not getting as good of odds overall. 

NBA Western Conference Championship Odds: Just like the Eastern Conference champs, you can also bet on the Western Conference winners. The West is often much more competitive than the East, giving you more competitive teams, and as a result, bigger odds if you can manage to pick out your favorite from the teams in the mix. The Nuggets were not the favorites going into last season to win either the Western Conference or the NBA Finals, which means bettors who took them to win both would have made a hefty profit. 

Most Valuable Player Award: Outside of betting on teams to win certain championships, you can also bet on individual players for NBA futures bets. The most popular thing to bet on would be the NBA MVP award. Since the NBA’s superstars are often pretty set in stone, the MVP betting odds are often not too incredibly high and feature a few of the game’s biggest superstars, like Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Steph Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Embiid would have made you a nice profit if you could have predicted him as the MVP before his breakout season.
