Carmelo Anthony Biography Details, Age, Net Worth, & Basketball Career

Carmelo Anthony is an American pro basketball player who currently plays forward for the Portland Trail Blazers. He is considered a future Hall of Famer and one of the best pure scorers of his generation. Anthony is capable of scoring in a variety of ways and has been hailed as one of the best clutch players in the NBA. On the other hand, Anthony has never won an NBA title and been criticized for not winning enough during his pro career. However, Anthony won a national championship in his only college season at Syracuse University and has been a part of three Olympic teams that won a gold medal.

Anthony was born May 29, 1984, in Brooklyn and moved with his mother to Baltimore when he was eight years old. After a storied high school career, Anthony played one season of college basketball at Syracuse. He’s considered arguably the best one-and-done players in college basketball history, helping Syracuse win a national championship while averaging 22.2 points and 10 rebounds per game and winning Final Four Most Outstanding Player.

The Denver Nuggets selected Anthony 3rd overall in the 2003 NBA Draft. If he had not been in the same draft class as LeBron James, he likely would have been the first overall pick and the favorite for Rookie of the Year. He played with the Nuggets for seven-plus seasons before a 2011 trade to the New York Knicks, ultimately playing parts of seven seasons in New York. During that time, Anthony was an all-star 10 times and won the NBA scoring title in 2013. Anthony then had brief stints with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets before signing with the Portland Trail Blazers in November 2019.

Carmelo Anthony Basketball Career

High School Career (Towson Catholic High School, Oak Hill Academy)

For the first three years of high school, Carmelo Anthony commuted from his home in Baltimore to Towson Catholic High School. As a sophomore, he averaged 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals, increasing that production substantially as a junior, averaging 23 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. After his junior season, Anthony was named Baltimore's County Player of the Year, All-Metropolitan Player of the Year, and Baltimore Catholic League Player of the Year.

For his senior year of high school, Anthony transferred to the famous Oak Hill Academy. During that season, Anthony helped Oak Hill to a win in the highly-anticipated game against LeBron James and St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. Ultimately, he averaged 21.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and four assists during his senior season, being named a McDonald’s All-American, among many other distinctions.

College Career (Syracuse Orange)

Before his senior year of high school, Anthony committed to Syracuse and played under Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim. As a freshman, he averaged 22.2 points and 10 rebounds per game, leading his team in both categories. His best game came in the Final Four when he scored 33 points against Texas. Ultimately, Syracuse beat Kansas to win the 2003 national championship with Anthony receiving Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors. He was also named Big East Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-Big East. After helping the Orangemen win a national title, Anthony opted to leave school and declare for the NBA Draft.

NBA Career

The Denver Nuggets selected Anthony 3rd overall in the 2003 NBA Draft behind LeBron James and infamous bust Darko Miličić. As a rookie, Anthony averaged 21 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He was a unanimous choice for NBA All-Rookie First Team and finished second behind James in Rookie of the Year voting. Anthony continued to be the catalyst for the Nuggets going from perennial bottomfeeder to playoff contender. His scoring prowess continued to show with Anthony ultimately averaging a career-high 28.9 points during the 2006-07 season in what was the first of his 10 all-star appearances.

In February 2011, Anthony and Denver point guard Chauncey Billups were traded to the New York Knicks in a three-team deal. During the 2012-13 season, Anthony led the NBA in scoring with 28.7 points per game. However, his career in New York soon started to sour, as the Knicks failed to make the playoffs during Anthony’s tenure after the 2012-13 season. Despite re-signing with the Knicks in 2014 and continuing to play at an all-star level, the team struggled. Amidst issues with team president Phil Jackson, Anthony requested a trade during the summer of 2017 and was soon dealt to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Anthony spent the 2017-18 season with the Thunder, averaging 16.2 points per game. After the season, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks, who bought out his contract. In the summer of 2018, Anthony signed a one-year deal with the Houston Rockets at the veteran's minimum. However, he played just 10 games for the Rockets before being traded to the Chicago Bulls in January. The Bulls waived him less than two weeks later. In November 2019, Anthony signed a non-guaranteed contract to join the Portland Trail Blazers. Prior to the NBA season being suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, Anthony played 50 games for Portland, all starts, averaging 15.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in a minor Renaissance.
